Canon sent me some professional PTZ cameras (the CR-N500) to see if they would make good podcasting cameras.. what do you think?

[Music] Ready for the zoom in I'm [Music] Ready so starting a podcast seems to be The thing to do today and it makes sense Like just from a logistical standpoint It's the easiest kind of content to get Started on you can start with some Pretty simple gear and it requires Little to no fancy editing skills so now We've got famous people starting Podcasts and you've got normal people Getting famous from their podcasts but If you want to join the big leagues Podcasting gear has become pretty Serious the thing is podcasting setups Have a problem because podcasts are shot Completely sequentially with no major Cuts you can't adjust camera angles Between shots the way I can in these Videos meaning if you gain or lose a Guest during the podcast or maybe you Just want more of a variety of shots to Keep it visually interesting you need a Different camera for every single camera Camera angle which is why it surprises Me that podcast setups in general are Sleeping on a key piece of camera Tech Is the Canon crn 500 it's a PTZ camera Or a pan tilt zoom camera you usually See them in professional broadcast live TV shows sometimes churches but I'm Surprised you don't see them more in Podcasts because it seems like they
Might be the perfect camera for one and Just to show you why behind me here at Our little stage setup thing we're going To to build a podcast setup and using Only three cameras we're going to set up Eight different camera angles for this Podcast I also think you'll be surprised Here I think a lot of people assume that These PTZ cameras have lower quality Than a fullframe mirrorless like the Canon EOS r5c that I'm shooting on right Now but I bet once we set them up you Won't be able to tell which one's which That'll be a fun test let's do that but I guess let's get building this thing [Music] We decided to build a podcast in this Corner over here utilizing two couches For extreme Comfort we're going to Utilize the door as the entry for a Guest when they walk in it's going to be Right between the two couches perfect Perfect entry and we mounted two of our Panel lights to the ceiling with grids On them to keep it real Moody so it Really only lights the person sitting There and then just for fun because we Got TVs on this wall here we're going to Display graphics with the name of the Guest over over their head so like you Know just Tony Hawk with an arrow Pointing to Tony Hawk who's obviously Our first guest on this podcast and then If we want to go the extra mile we could
Throw like a desk in front of this white Wall here and that could be like the Control room person sitting there you Know making sure that all of our callers Get screened and no bad words get Through controlling the cameras with the Crazy controller that Canon s to us for This video that's the plan let's keep Building [Applause] [Music] You guys seeing this Thing let's talk a little bit about this Chunk the Canon crn 500 is a motorized PTZ camera with a 1-in sensor and a Massive optical zoom range you see how Thick see how thick that is we're going To be taking advantage of that the io is Extensive I I don't think I need to talk About every single port on here cuz you Can pretty much connect it to anything But one of the coolest things wait Where's it no it's on the ground hey Dustin can you grab me one of the uh Ethernet cables down Here I don't want to get off the Table how got Toe all Right you're good that that was yeah That was it that was the whole thing so Just by plugging in this one ethernet Cable I can send the video over ndi but I can also power it using Poe so like This one this one ethernet cable just
Does it all it's that's it's all you Need and it can shoot up to 4K 30 or 10860 and using cannons autofocus and Color and processing it matches with Other Canon cameras really well which is What we're going to show later in this Because even though we're using two of These crn 500s we're also using this guy This is one of my more favorite Canon Cameras this is the Canon EOS r5c it's Their hybrid but also Cinema Camera this Shoots 45 megapixel photos but also Shoots 8K 60 raw internally this thing Is an absolute Monster not to mention This Mammoth of a lens I'm excited to See how this matches up how close the Images between these two are Surprisingly this camera is the more Affordable camera between the two of These and we're going to be getting like Four times the amount of shots from this One as we will with this one so it'll be Interesting to see if there's a Noticeable Gap in quality between these Two [Music] Let's give it up for our first guest Kenzie Nmo welcome to the Podcast thanks for having me super happy To have you on here how did you manage To clear the schedule all right first Order of business mhm is we need people To judge between these two camera angles
So we're going to cut to my camera angle Right here and then we're going to cut To your camera Angle and then just one more time my Camera angle and your camera Angle can you tell which one is which I'll leave you like 3 seconds to comment By the way I hope you guys really like My logo that I slap together I think That's a really catchy podcast title I Do too if I were to make one I think That's what I would do I think you Should make it there aren't enough I'm I Don't think I'm funny enough to be on a Podcast that's my thing no but I am so Oh so you should make a podcast no if we Did one together oh but I got to answer The question uh the camera on me is the R5c the camera on you is the PTZ mic how Many of you got it right in the comments How many of you guessed wrong what was The giveaway if you got it right I am Actually very impressed at how well the Two go together but more important order Business I promised eight camera angles With these three cameras you guys seen Three we got the wide one here we got The closeup on me and the close-up on Kenzie camera angle four is this one Which is a wider shot for the guest for When there's more than one guest angle Number five is the second camera angle Of the host and angle number six is a Fully wide shot of the guest side just
In case they stand up and throw some Kind of tantrum angle number seven is The second close-up angle of the guest Just for some variety and angle number Eight is a closeup of the other side of That couch in case we have a second Guest you took my seat again but we did It I fulfilled my promise it's eight Shots with three different cameras Making sure each one actually has a Decent use so now that I spent like 20 To 30 hours let me give you my final Thoughts on using these PTZ cameras in An actual podcast so I guess the Question is would I actually use these In my own setup now that I've been given The chance to give them an honest try Here because I do have to give these Back I don't I don't get to keep these I Think the setup we had here was actually The the optimal strategy here two ptzs And then one mirrorless having one Mirrorless like the r5c where you can Take it off the tripod and shoot Thumbnails with it and shoot handheld Footage with it has there's a lot of Value there personally if I were looking For a mirrorless camera to match these PTZ cameras for my setup I'd probably go With the R5 Mark I that brand new one That just released just because it has Ibis in it and a couple more things that Might make it a little better for Vlogging but as long as I have one
Mirrorless camera for flexibility off Tripod I think I would make the rest of My podcast cameras ptzs for flexibility On tripod like the biggest thing that I Noticed while shooting this was the Massive Zoom range of this thing like we Could go from a complete wide shot all The way to a closeup of someone's Eyeball if we wanted to we We didn't I mean I don't know why you'd Want a shot of someone's eyeball but Like with this one for example we Actually had to digitally punch in in OBS because we couldn't get this one to Zoom far enough in so the flexibility to Move these cameras wherever you can Place them and then get whatever shot You want without having to buy extra Lenses for multiple cameras it's kind of A GameChanger also the controller that They sent over here is wild like if You're doing a little bit higher Production podcast or some kind of Broadcast having that or even the more Budget friendly version like slim down Version that can be really nice but if This is like a one to Twan crew and you Want something a little bit simpler These things can actually be controlled By a stream deck which is really cool I Was pleasantly surprised by the quality That opening shot of this video that was The first time we had set this up and Looked at it throughout this whole video
I was expecting a sacrifice in quality And that sacrifice just never came now Every shot with this thing looked great I think PTC cameras might be the Ultimate podcast Camera but those are just my thoughts do You agree do you disagree I'd love to Hear your comments down below and as Always happy streaming
