EQ and compression are like peanut Butter and jelly before your ears I Originally wrote this bit where Dustin Was going to reach in and smother peanut Butter on my ears and I'm really glad I Decided against that compression is the Thing that makes the loud Parts quieter And the quiet Parts louder but it also Does way more than that and it's super Easy to set up so let me show you let's Bang this thing Out the 5-second sponsor of this video Is the high mouse pad hi Reallygood mous pads.com I made this for You go check it out all right you ready To be a compression expert in less than 5 minutes let's go question one of two Why is compression more important than You probably realize sure using Compression to have your voice at a Steady volume makes you sound a little Bit better but let me blow your mind With some college knowledge this is Something called the Fletcher mson curve And if you pull that name out when You're talking to audio people like well According to the Fletcher mson curve Immediate respect on your name you don't Have to know what everything is is on There in fact just just get rid of it But what it means is that as sounds get Quieter your brain has a harder time Hearing the low frequencies and the Higher frequencies so as your voice gets

Quieter in your content your voice Starts to get thinner and muddier to The Listener using a compressor to make the Quiet Parts louder will also make your Voice sound Fuller and brighter how cool Is that also fun trivia fact the lower Limit of what your ears are capable of Hearing is called the threshold of Hearing makes sense but the upper limit Of what you can hear is called called The threshold of pain that's a real Auditory term I think it's a great band Name you're welcome question two of this Three how does this thing even work Compressors look way more complicated Than they really are Because unless You're like a big shot music producer You only have to touch like three Settings so we're going to keep this Super simple I made a little Soundwave For you as a visual it's not very good It'll get the job done you can see on This Soundwave that the loudest part is Right here and the quietest part is Right here how a compressor works is That you you tell it that anything above A certain volume you want to shrink that Volume down a little bit and then you Want to boost back up the entire thing That way if we look back at our original Loud parts and quiet Parts you can see That the loud parts are quieter and the Quiet parts are louder and so it's Compressing everything above this line

At a ratio just to give a number example Let's say you want to lower the volume Of anything over 10 DB and you want to Lower it at a ratio of 4:1 that means if We want to lower the volume of anything Above 10 DB and we want to lower it at a 4:1 ratio if this point is 4 DB above 10 Or let's say this is 14 DB we're going To shrink it down so that is now 1 deci Above 10 or 11 DB loud and if it were at 18 DB we would shrink it down to be at 12 DB and so on and that's pretty much It final question how do I properly set My compression well all we have to do Always go to those three settings that I Mentioned before we've got the line Where the compression starts and that's Called the threshold right here we've Got the ratio of compression that you Can see right here and we have the Boost At the end called the makeup game the Ratio is the easiest so we're going to Start there almost anytime you're Compressing a voice you want the ratio Set at 4:1 in fact it's so common that Most compressors just have that set by Default so look at that 4: one step one Finished step two next we set the Threshold or the volume level where the Compression actually kicks in some Compressors make it really easy by Giving you another meter called gain Reduction that actually lets you know How much gain the compression is

Squishing how much quieter it's making How much it's removing all you want to Do here is move the threshold to a point Where the gain reduction spends most of Its time between -5 and -10 DB check Check check this is my voice on the Compressor looks like we're sitting Between 5 and 10 pretty much the whole Time step three now now all we have to Do is bring that boost back in until the Output shows that we spend most of our Time between -10 and -6 DB this isn't Going to make any sense on my recording Because I'm using like the the monitor Microphone and so it's super quiet don't Worry about that but the Elgato one and Some other ones make it really easy by Giving you auto makeup so we didn't even Have to do step three that's the whole Thing congratulations you have a Properly set compressor it wasn't that Hard was it I'm proud of you I'm proud Of us how do we do on on time I was Trying to make this less than like six Minutes I like these short tutorials They're great and they leave you enough Time to go down and um hit that like And Subscribe button because it lets YouTube Know that you like these videos and it's Free and it helps me out a bunch so Thank you for that it also leaves you Enough time to go to reallygood mous Pads.com and check out all of our super Cool designs so go do that happy

Streaming and um I love You have a great time peace A [Music]
