That he's going to be president but I Was 25 I was newly married and I Realized that I was going to have to be A responsible adult soon and so if I was Going to make this happen it had to be Pretty quick I'd also realize that my Degree probably wouldn't get me a job And even if it did I wouldn't like that Job very much so combining all those Emotions into a naive 25-year-old's head I I quit my job at the Apple Store I Dropped out of college after 5 years and My brand new bride and I pursued a YouTube music career and we made a lot Of videos none of them really got any Views so then we made a lot of vines we Made Vines every day those never got any Views either and we were living off of Savings we had enough savings that we Could live for eight months in our tiny Apartment in Salt Lake and we did this For 7 months and money was getting low And we started talking about what we Were going to do when it ran out the Next month and I saw an opportunity There were people on Vine who were good At music and there were viners who were Good at film making and there were Viners who were good at visual effects I Was mid at all three of those but no one Was combining them so I figured we could Do our music combine it with some sort Of expected visual twist and people Would be watching and would go whoa what
Just happened I need to see that again And they would watch it over over and Over again and when I tell you it only Took three tries and then that vine I Showed you in the beginning went Completely viral like over uh 100 Million views the full YouTube cover we Posted had tens of millions of views we Hit a million followers within a month That song Cool Kids by ekos Smith it Went platinum like a month later it's The only song I've ever heard of where They released a second music video two Years after the first music video Because the song Finally blew up and They wanted to C capitalize on the Relevancy and it launched my wife's Music career fun fact for a long time if You Googled Kenzie nmo my wife it showed All of her albums and all of her videos And her channels and if you Googled Harris heler it said keny nimo's husband And I wore that as a badge of honor Still do that's important Kenzie Released an album we toured across US And Canada we were on TV we were in Time Square we had a wild 2year music career Before Vine shut down and our music Career kind of pretty much it pretty Much shut down it fizzled out over the Next little bit with it Kenzie was also Super burnt out like making weekly cover Music videos had sucked all the passion For music out of her like I don't blame
Her one bit and I went back to get a Traditional job not like super Traditional like it was still a little Different I had taken what I learned From the two years on social media and I Helped other people create social media Videos for a couple years but I'll be Completely real with you that sucked and Not that the job itself sucked like it Was fine I was able to support my family But like officially giving up getting a Job again and having to admit to myself That my time as a Creator was Over it was really really hard like my Time to do what I loved something I'd Worked for for nearly a decade to Achieve and it only lasted 2 years and I Wasn't really the one that got to make The choice for myself to end it because It wasn't my name on the YouTube channel At the end it was entirely my wife's Choice like that 2 years as a Creator Was I had won the Lottery and it probably wasn't going to Happen again so in my spare time outside My job I'd found twitch and I started Streaming Halo for fun and messing Around with streaming equipment and one Day I decided I would try to plug my big Fat boy Canon 5D DSLR I actually have it Over here one second this this thick boy It's dusty it's a it's a decoration now And I tried plugging this thing into a Capture card just something I hadn't
Seen anyone else do before and it Worked and I saw an opportunity wouldn't You know it the quality of twitch Streams was like years behind the Quality of YouTube content like these Streamers did they're not content Creators they're Gamers and here I was Now with the highest quality stream that Anyone had ever seen on Twitch and I was Getting questions asked about it so I Started grinding this I was working two Jobs during the day and then streaming And making YouTube videos at night Usually editing in bed until like 3:00 Or 4: in the morning Kenzie would be in Bed like wrapping herself around my left Arm asleep and so ID just be like Editing at 3:00 in the morning on my MacBook with one hand good times but I Wasn't making any money and I just Gotten offered a really good job in Nevada doing social media for this big New tech company out there and it paid More than both of my other two jobs Combined so I was planning on taking That job this was like end of November 2018 I told the hiring manager I said Just give me a couple weeks to give you My answer and it was a good job but I Wanted the streaming thing to work out Like I wanted it to work out really bad And Then this happened one video just one Video took off it was this video
Actually it's no uh it's no cool kids Vine you know it didn't get 100 million Views but it did get 10 times the views Of my normal videos and the views they Kept coming they were continuing the big Thing though is that I was getting Twitch notifications like crazy I was Getting a twitch follower notification On my phone every 30 seconds that was a Really big deal to me like my next Stream went from a 10 viewer normal to a 40 viewer average and then the next Stream went to like 80 to 100 viewers And then the next stream went to 130 Viewers like I did a 24-hour stream that Month in December and I made ,000 in that stream the CEO of the tech Company called me and said what's going On I just found out you haven't started Working for me yet and I I told the guy I probably shouldn't this is probably Stupid like this could have turned out Really poorly but I said to like this Multi-millionaire CEO I said I just made ,000 in a single day live streaming on Twitch can you match that like obviously He said I can't match that and so I said Okay then I I have to turn down the job And here we are what's always been wild To me is that even though like these two Careers have been vastly different the Vine and the gaming stuff just how Similar these two stories are kind of Freaks me out a little bit like both of
These times I saw an opportunity both Times I kept pushing past the point Where most people give up both of them Came down to the wire like where I only Had a couple weeks left and then in both Of them one video started the chain Reaction that built into an entire Career it just takes that one and I Would argue to say that almost any Successful Creator knows the one video That made them feel like oh I could do That but like I'm not an especially good Streamer I'm not even an especially good YouTuber yet but like if I can wax a Little arrogant here like I realize my Strengths and I play to those strengths My strengths are recognizing Opportunities that most people don't see And then maybe being delusional enough To think that I'm capable of pulling it Off it's how I was able to work on Stream beats for months and get it out Literally one month before the gigantic Dmca wave on Twitch of 2020 which side Note I'm very aware of the Latin author Problem on YouTube right now YouTube's Content ID flaws are getting exploited Hard and like all the copyright free Guys are having problems we put a new Form on the stream beats.com temporary Page while we're working on the new site And if you fill that out we might be Able to use it to whitelist channels so So fill that out if you've gotten some
